It was revealed a few days ago that Becky Lynch would be given her rematch for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at the Royal Rumble when she takes on Asuka, but it appears that former SmackDown General Manager Paige was unable to make this match official before she was removed from power.
This week on SmackDown Live Shane McMahon made the announcement that Paige would no longer be the authority figure on a Tuesday night, since the era would see the McMahon family running both SmackDown and Raw.
This meant that Paige was no longer able to make matches, so she recently took to Twitter to confirm that the match wasn’t official for the first pay-per-view of 2019.
This has started speculation which now suggests that Becky Lynch could instead be the woman who wins the Royal Rumble and then chooses to face Ronda Rousey for the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania.
This would have worked just as well if Lynch cashed in her rematch against Asuka but was unable to regain her Championship, so she decided to enter the Royal Rumble later in the night, since many of the WWE Universe now expect Lynch to be just the second woman in WWE history to have such an accomplishment.
It’s strange that WWE has used Paige as a scapegoat for an advert that wasn’t supposed to be released or was released too soon, but the former General Manager does seem like the perfect person to pin this on.
The women are the main focus of both SmackDown and Raw at present and this most recent switch could mean that there are huge plans for them moving forward.
