Nia Jax was originally scheduled to take on Becky Lynch at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view earlier this month but given the news that The Man was expecting her first child with fiance Seth Rollins, WWE changed the plans at the last minute.
The company opted to make the Money in the Bank contract match for the Raw Women’s Championship and Lynch then awarded Asuka the Championship a few weeks ago on Raw. It came as no surprise this week when Nia Jax was the one who came out on top in this week’s triple threat match to determine The Empress of Tomorrow’s opponent at Backlash.
Charlotte Flair has a huge match this week on Sunday when she defends the NXT Women’s Championship against Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley, while Natalya seems to be following her own storyline. At present it’s unknown why Shayna Baszler wasn’t part of the match since Baszler defeated Natalya in a Submission Match last week on Raw.
Nia Jax and Asuka have crossed paths a number of times over the past few weeks and last week the Raw Women’s Champion was able to get the better of The Irresistible Force. Jax and Asuka have quite the history in the ring with the Japanese star coming out on top in almost every encounter between the two stars in recent history.
Jax overcame a lot of abuse in the match this week on Raw and was even powerbombed through the announce table at one point before she was able to deliver the Samoan Drop to Natalya to pick up the victory and set up her first Women’s Championship match in more than a year.
Jax recently made her return from double ACL surgery and even though she came up short at Money in the Bank in the contract ladder match, Jax was still able to land herself the title shot at the expense of Shayna Baszler, who has seemingly been forgotten on Raw.
