The Raw Women’s Championship match at Extreme Rules ended in controversy when Bayley took the referee’s shirt and counted the pin for Sasha Banks. Of course, Banks wasn’t the official Champion, but she still walked out of the Performance Center with Asuka’s Raw Women’s Championship.
Asuka was hit with the Championship belt from behind while Kairi Sane had been taken out on the outside with a Bayley to Belly a few minutes earlier, so there was no one to step in and stop Bayley and Banks from making the count and taking the Championship at Extreme Rules.
Banks tried to justify her actions tonight on Raw by stating that Bayley acted in a way that any role model would, before Asuka then made her way out to call Banks a thief.
The situation obviously needed the input of an authority figure, which is why Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon appeared on the titantron.
McMahon announced that Banks was not the Women’s Champion even though The Boss believed that she was, McMahon stated that the win at Extreme Rules didn’t stand and that Banks would be forced to step into a Raw Women’s Championship match next week on Raw.
The WWE CBO also revealed that as part of the match, Banks can lose via disqualification, count-out, pin or submission and even pointed out that she could lose if Bayley got involved in the match.
At present, it appears that Banks is keeping hold of the title until next week’s episode of Raw, which is when the rightful Champion will be decided.
While this kind of match would usually have been kept until SummerSlam, WWE is pushing to ensure that their weekly shows are bringing in decent ratings at present, which is why this week’s episode includes Randy Orton vs The Big Show in an unsanctioned match.
