After weeks of issues between Alexa Bliss, Nikki Cross, Bayley and Sasha Banks, the Women’s Tag Team Championships were put on the line in this week’s main event of SmackDown.
Bliss and Cross have also had a back and forth with The IIconics on Monday Night Raw and it was believed that this would lead to a triple threat Tag Team Championship match at Backlash, but this may not be the case any longer.
Banks and Bayley were the first-ever Women’s Tag Team Champions and won the titles back at Elimination Chamber last year. The duo now becomes just the second team to lift the titles twice after being able to overcome the threat of Bliss and Cross this week on SmackDown.
The match had some shaky moments, especially when Banks looked to have the match won for her team with The Bank Statement before Bayley ran in and broke up the move.
Bayley was on hand to help her partner when Bliss looked to run in and break up a second Bank Statement before The Boss managed to roll through and pin Cross to reclaim the Championships.
The recent issues between Banks and Bayley and the fact that the company has been teasing a wedge between them makes this win even more intriguing.
Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose were Tag Team Champions when their friendship dissolved back in 2018 and it’s likely that their friendship could go the same way if the hints from other stars continue or if The Boss decides that she wants to challenge for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
Backlash is just over a week away and Bayley is yet to be handed a challenger for the Women’s Championship, so it’s likely that she will instead be defending the Women’s Tag Team Championships alongside The Boss.
