AEW Women’s Championship Match: Riho(c) vs. Emi Sakura

In a battle of the student and the master, 22-year-old Riho defended her title against Sakura, who is nearly double her age at 43!

Riho tried to take down the much larger frame of Sakura with the high paced offense but failed at doing that. Riho launched a series of stomps but couldn’t keep the challenger down. Sakura dropped the champion with a backdrop driver, only for a near fall.

Riho fired away some fast roll-up attempts, eventually winning the match with a high-stack rollup.

Result: Riho retained via pinfall

Grade: B+

Analysis: The match was decent overall, but the Women’s Division still lacks a proper talent at the top. Riho and Sakura tried to do their best at creating a proper story with the teacher-student dynamic, but the match lacked proper buildup for the fans to feel invested.

AEW desperately needs to build proper stars in the female roster, as their Wednesday Night rivals NXT are succeeding greatly in that aspect.
