AEW kicked off 2021 with the first night of New Year’s Smash, following last week’s highly acclaimed tribute show for the late Brodie Lee
The Young Bucks and SCU def. The Acclaimed and TH2
After weeks of confrontation between these teams, they faced off in an eight-man tag match. The babyfaces came out on top after some quick high paced action, when Daniels tagged in to hit moonsault-piledriver combination for the pinfall.
Post-match, Kazarian said Daniels and he will continue to remain a team, and shook hands with their teammates
Jon Moxley cut a promo and said he will take revenge for Omega and Callis’ actions, but it won’t be during the main-event between Rey Fenix and Omega. He sent out a warning to the AEW World Champion to close the segment.
Backstage: Chuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy revealed that Trent will be out for a few months before they were interrupted by Miro’s gang. Miro invited them to their house and said, if they lose the tag-match next week, Chuck has to become Miro’s ‘young-boy’
Wardlow def. Jake Hager
The two beefy dudes of Inner Circle produced an amazing hoss fight, with several destructive maneuvers. Wardlow ended up pinning Hager with the F-10.
Post-match, the duo did fist bumps as Jericho said Inner Circle is still intact.
Backstage: Private Party brought gin, and Snoop Dogg brought their juice. Matt Hardy offered them contracts, saying Twitch and Cameo is allowed (taking a shot at WWE) and they both happily signed it.
Sting Interrupts Weigh-In
Team Taz and Darby Allin entered the ring for the official weigh-in. Cage weighed in at 272 pounds while Allin stood at 170. Sting appeared, which made the heels retreat. Sting and Allin stared each other down to end the segment.
Backstage: MJF walked up to a frustrated Jake Hager and gave him words of motivation. Hager gave him a fist bump and asked him to leave.
Cody Rhodes def. Matt Sydal
Cody made his entrance with Snoop Dogg who sung a remixed version of his theme. Cody took out Sydal quite easily and delivered two Cross Rhodes to finish it off.
Post-match, Luther and Serpentico jumped in the ring to attack Cody but were taken care of. Snoop Dogg delivered a splash from the top rope to Serpentico as Cody counted to three.
AEW Women’s Championship | Hikaru Shida(c) def. Abadon
The two had a pre-match brawl, and Abadon ended up biting Shida’s neck once again. Abadon dominated the match but ended up losing out after Shida hit a running knee out of nowhere.
AEW World Championship | Kenny Omega(c) def. Rey Fenix
Both the stars delivered several high-octane moves throughout the match, with Fenix doing his usual jawdropping flippy stuff. However, Omega reigned supreme after he countered Fenix’s high flying move, to deliver a tiger driver, v-trigger, and a One-Winged Angel for the win.
Post-match, Omega looked to attack Fenix further, but Jon Moxley made the save with a barbed wire bat. Good Brothers (Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson) ran in, as a brawl broke out.
The Young Bucks rushed to the ring, but ended up hitting superkicks on Varsity Blondes, and turned heel. The Young Bucks, Good Brothers, and Kenny Omega did the Bullet Club ‘Too-Sweet’ sign to end the show.
