WWE NXT Results, Sept. 30: Challengers Gain Upperhand Ahead of Takeover: 31

The last episode of WWE NXT before Takeover: 31 aired with final hype and build for this Saturday’s event.

Shotzi Blackheart def. Dakota Kai

After the altercation between the duo in last week’s Battle Royal, they faced off in a singles match. Raquel Gonzalez helped Kai from ringside and delivered a cheap shot to Shotzi. Rhea Ripley attacked Gonzalez, and the distraction allowed Blackheart to roll-up Kai for the win

The Cruiserweight Face-Off

Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott and Santos Escobar were interviewed before their match at Takeover, with Scott bringing up Escobar’s shorthanded tactics, and how Scott is the only guy in WWE to pin him.

Escobar called out his challenger for making excuses, and said, as a champ, he has reignited the Cruiserweight Division. The duo vowed to take each other down at Takeover: 31 to end the segment.

Backstage: Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae showed no remorse for injuring Tegan Nox and putting her out of action, and said they will become champs on Sunday.

Cameron Grimes Invitational Stepping Stone to the Moon Challenge: Joey Pistachio, Joey Strong, Ridge Holland

Cameron Grimes invented his own version of Gauntlet Eliminator and took down Joey Pistachio quickly with the Cave. Joey Strong’s entrance was marred by Ridge Holland, who went in the ring and annihilated Grimes.

Backstage: Austin Theory took offense to Kyle O’ Reilly being called the future of NXT, as he felt he is the one to lead the brand.

Kushida def. Tony Nese

Kushida continued his ultra-aggressive style, and took down the former Cruiserweight Champion with the Hoverboard Lock. Post-match, Velveteen Dream appeared on the screen and declared Takeover will be his day.

Backstage: Cameron Grimes nursed his injuries as Dexter Lumis made his return to NXT and stared him down.

Adam Cole def. Austin Theory

Cole listed down The Undisputed Era’s achievements and how they’ve dominated the brand for three years. He called out Theory for his comments earlier and challenged him for a match, and he obliged.

Cole and Theory had a hard-fought battle before Cole hit a Ushigoroshi followed by the Last Shot to reign supreme. Post-match, Cole hyped up O’Reilly and said he will come out on top at Takeover.

Backstage: Damian Priest and Io Shirai laughed off Gargano-LeRae’s status as the power couple, and exchanged friendly greetings before their main-event match.

Kayden Carter def. Xia Li

With her partner Kacy Catanzaro by her side, Carter managed to pick up the win over Li with a roll-up. Post-match, Li turned down Carter and Catanzaro’s help and stormed to the back.

The Heartbreak Show

Shawn Michaels had a sit-down interview with Finn Balor and Kyle O’Reilly. The duo showed massive respect for each other and commended their wrestling abilities. However, some bad blood ensued with both the superstars willing to break each other at Takeover.

Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae def. Damian Priest and Io Shirai

The main-event champions vs. challengers mixed tag team match saw the challengers come out on top. Shirai delivered a moon-sault to Gargano and tagged in Priest. However, a low-blow kick from LeRae to Priest was enough for Gargano to hit the One Final Beat DDT and win the match.

Post-match, the couple celebrated with the belts together in the ring.
