WWE SmackDown Results, August 28, 2020

The go-home show for WWE Payback kicked off with Vince McMahon asking Adam Pearce to get the signatures of all the three competitors in the Universal Championship before the end of the night.

Jeff Hardy cut an in-ring promo about his IC title victory, before being interrupted by AJ Styles who claimed foul play in their match last week.

WWE Intercontinental Championship Match | Jeff Hardy(c) def. Shinsuke Nakamura: Styles looked on from commentary as Hardy retained his title in an open challenge, after hitting Nakamura with the Swanton Bomb.

Post-match, Sami Zayn returned and cut off Hardy’s celebrations, with his own Intercontinental Championship and hit him with a Helluva Kick

Backstage, Zayn asserted his status as the true IC champion, as he never lost the title after winning it at Elimination Chamber earlier this year.

Bray Wyatt celebrated his title win inside the Firefly Fun House, as Postman Pearce made his appearance and asked for Wyatt’s signature. Wyatt sent out a serious warning to his competitors to end the segment.

Matt Riddle called out King Corbin for a fight, and the duo exchanged words before Shorty G attacked Riddle from behind.

Matt Riddle def. Shorty G: Riddle picked up the win in quick fashion, hitting G with the Bro Derek for the three-count.

Post-match, Corbin entered the ring, but quickly retreated as a fired-up Riddle stood tall to end the segment.

The verbal battle between Big E and Miz from Talking Smack was aired, as Miz/Morrison and Sheamus squared off against Heavy Machinery and Big E before their match later in the night.

Pearce tried to find Roman Reigns who refused to open the door. King Corbin accepted Riddle’s challenge for a match at Payback and had harsh words for the former UFC star.

Bayley and a gloomy Sasha Banks trash-talked Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax before their match at Payback. The tensions between Banks and Bayley continued to rise in the segment.

Pearce found Braun Strowman, but Drew Gulak hit Strowman with a chair. Strowman demanded a match against Gulak from Pearce to sign the contract.

Sami Zayn reunited with Nakamura and Cesaro, but they didn’t want anything to do with him, as they did not appreciate Zayn’s absence without any calls.

Braun Strowman def. Drew Gulak: Strowman squashed Gulak in a quick match, picking up the win the running powerslam. He signed the contract and threw it in Pearce’s face.

Nakamura and Cesaro attacked Gran Metallik and Lince Dorado after Kalisto asked the duo to watch him defeat Cesaro.

Cesaro def. Kalisto: Kalisto’s return match ended in a loss after a distraction from Nakamura and his own partners cost him the encounter.

Alexa Bliss in a new look hugged Nikki Cross and Tamina, but Cross’ disliked Bliss’ new hairstyle which reminded her of The Fiend. Bliss broke Cross’ cup and left the scene in anger.

Big E and Heavy Machinery def. Sheamus, Miz and John Morrison: Sheamus left the match after exchanging words with his own team-mates, and Big E ended up hitting the Big Ending on Miz for the win.

Pearce finally found Roman Reigns backstage, who signed the contract and introduced his new manager, Paul Heyman, as the show went off the air.
