<p>WWE Crown Jewel took place in Saudi Arabia amidst controversies. Let&#8217;s take a look at how the pay-per-view performed.</p>
<h2><strong>Rusev is again held back</strong></h2>

<p>This is one of those classic cases where WWE hold on desperately to something that is simply not working.</p>

<p>Nakamura has been pretty much in a dead state since he won the US championship. If Rusev was allowed to win, it would have nicely shaken things up and would have gotten people excited about the US title again. Instead, we got a rerun of all that is wrong with WWE.</p>
<p>The match was pretty decent but the ending was a rehash of every other Nakamura match with a slight difference. Instead of hitting a crotch shot with his fist, he used his head this time. As if putting this match on the kick-off show wasn&#8217;t enough, WWE had to take the least imaginative route to start this show.</p>

<p>This match continued the underwhelming tone set by the kick-off match. Mysterio was all right here but somehow Orton seemed to have an off night. These two lacked the kind of chemistry that makes Mysterio&#8217;s matches exciting. Thankfully, the torture didn&#8217;t last long and Mysterio won which meant that we would get to see more of him later.</p>

<h2><strong>The Miz upends Jeff Hardy</strong></h2>

<p>Finally we got to the first decent match on the show. Miz as always was dependable and Jeff brought his A-game to keep the crowd on its feet. It had plenty of near falls and Hardy came agonizingly close to winning. Miz winning was kinda predictable as a face had won the earlier match. The Miz keeps improving as each show goes by.</p>

<h2><strong>Seth Rollins overcomes Bobby Lashley quite easily</strong></h2>

<p>This match fell flat which is a travesty considering Seth Rollins was in it. The match was too short to be able to build any reasonable momentum. Again, the only positive thing about this match was Rollins picking up the win.</p>
<p>Lashley has had an underwhelming return and things are going from bad to worse with each passing day. This match had all the signs of a last minute replacement. Cena, it seems, threw more than a wrench into WWE&#8217;s plans.</p>

<h2><strong>Kurt Angle still has it</strong></h2>

<p>WWE blew away a great chance by having Angle wrestle in an inconsequential match. He is well past his prime but he can still put up a great show when called upon. Dolph Ziggler played his part quite well too. He managed to wrestle safely without sacrificing any of the excitement. It was also a clean win for Ziggler.</p>
<p>Seeing Angle wrestle is so much better than seeing him as the GM. If he is healthy enough then he could have one last run as a full time wrestler and tear the house down a few times.</p>

<h2><strong>The Bar again steps into the shadow of the Big Show</strong></h2>

<p>Why can&#8217;t Big Show go back to being a regular gentle giant? Why does he have to spoil every tag match like this? This is especially atrocious as the match was going really well till then.</p>

<p>There was a lot of back and forth and the kind of team work only true tag teams can pull off. It was going so well that we would not have cared who won in the end but Big Show ruined it.</p>
<p>Do not get us wrong. This could work if WWE explains the beef Big Show has with the New Day. Instead we have the usual sloppy booking where we are just supposed to accept whatever WWE throws at us.</p>

<p>These two were great matches that somehow made the World Cup finally feel like the big deal it was always supposed to be. Two heels going to the finals however seemed a bit counter intuitive but we would later find out why none of this would matter.</p>

<p>The show finally started to pick up momentum and it began to feel that WWE had finally put on a show that would finally shadow all the controversies surrounding this show.</p>

<h2><strong>AJ Styles retains in the match of the night</strong></h2>

<p>This was a weird one as the match was easily the best of the night but in the grand scheme of things it offered nothing new.</p>

<p>This was clearly a match that was put together at the last minute and while that did not affect the match quality, it was a dampener as a feud and reduced the value of both Samoa Joe as a heel and the WWE title as well. Even if Daniel Bryan was the one who had fought in this match, it would have hardly made a difference.</p>

<h2><strong>Brock Lesnar is the champ again</strong></h2>

<p>We are sure every Roman Reigns hater is biting their tongues. This was a cheap way to make Lesnar the champion without trying to make Strowman look weak but we don&#8217;t think it worked here.</p>

<p>With Lesnar&#8217;s UFC opponent Daniel Cormier taking up another match, Lesnar&#8217;s UFC future might be on hold right now and that is why WWE probably decided to put the title on Lesnar. This screws up Strowman even further. Aimlessness seems to be the buzzword in WWE right now.</p>

<p>The final of the World cup ended up being an anti-climactic affair as WWE copped out of crowning one of the regular wrestlers as the best in the world.</p>

<p>The Miz and Ziggler were putting on a decent match until the Miz apparently got injured and Shane McMahon put himself in the match. While the ending was great with Shane McMahon&#8217;s Coast to Coast, Shane&#8217;s heel turn might be good in the long run but after such a build up this all felt like a big let down.</p>

<h2><strong>The veterans show how it is done</strong></h2>

<p>We had the least bit of expectations from this match but somehow it felt like the most earnest match of the night. There was emotion and great story telling and while all four are past their prime, this never felt like a bad match.</p>

<p>Triple H was the fittest but it seemed like early on he suffered some sort of injury that left his right hand useless. The big question was how did HBK fare and while he wasn&#8217;t his old self, it was still a great showing.</p>
<p>This was a great match and would have been a fitting end had the rest of the PPV been up to the mark.</p>

<p><strong>Overall Review: </strong>There had been so many controversies surrounding this PPV and so many last minute changes that the focus was never on the wrestling. Any thoughts of it all being redeemed by the wrestling was to prove futile as this was a PPV that was good only in brief segments and that too came very rarely. This simply sucked.</p>
