Shawn Michaels was originally set to be on commentary as part of this week’s SmackDown Live since Corey Graves and Byron Saxton were not in their usual positions and the company later revealed that Saxton’s absence was because of the passing of his father.
Interestingly, it was Xavier Woods and Big E who kicked off the show behind the commentary desk, while Shawn Michaels was instead advertised for an episode of Miz TV.
When the segment finally happened, Miz and HBK seemingly reminisced about The Raw Reunion and talked about the fact that both men were part of The Marine 6, before Dolph Ziggler put an end to what was seemingly a pointless segment.
Ziggler came down to the ring to insult The Heartbreak Kid and bring up the fact that like every other legend over the past few years, he was unable to remain retired and returned to the ring at Crown Jewel last year to help Triple H.
Ziggler called his return to the ring “embarrassing” which according to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated is exactly what Shawn Michaels asked The Showoff to do.
“Michaels, who was originally slated to do color commentary on the show, advocated for Ziggler to use the line slamming his 2018 return.” he wrote in his Week In Wrestling Column.
Michaels himself reportedly didn’t feel as though he embarrassed himself by coming out of retirement to perform in Saudi Arabia back in November, but it was a segment that seemingly allowed both men to get under each other’s skin.
The fact that the segment didn’t end with both men vocalizing their issues and turned physical with Dolph Ziggler superkicking the WWE Hall of Famer has now it’s opened up an entirely new dialogue about one more match for Shawn Michales against the man who is known as his second coming.
