At WrestleMania 36, Braun Strowman dethroned Universal Champion Goldberg to win the first singles title in his WWE career. The world title victory was indeed a huge push for The Monster who despite receiving multiple opportunities to become Universal Champion over the past few years, had failed to win the prestigious belt for various reasons.
However, Strowman was never supposed to win the Universal Title at WrestleMania as it was Roman Reigns who had been booked to win the championship all along. It was due to The Big Dog pulling out of the Show Of Shows that The Monster was shoved into the spotlight.
Tom Colohue is now reporting that there are backstage concerns regarding Strowman’s status as Universal Champion. Although he doesn’t feel like the “right guy” to represent the blue brand, it is to be noted that the top half of the card on SmackDown is quite weak at the moment.
“As regards to Strowman, he was the right guy at the right time, but he lucked into this Championship. This was never the plan. Unfortunately for Braun, there is a lot of dissenting voices backstage that aren’t necessarily in his corner.”
“There is a lot of debate almost constantly to whether Strowman is the right guy, but the top-level on SmackDown is it’s so bare at the moment.”
Strowman will be defending the Universal Title against “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at Extreme Rules. The possible outcome of the match sheds light on the status of The Fiend as well as Roman Reigns who is yet to return to storylines following his hiatus.
“What I think we’re going to see, is if the Fiend loses, then the Fiend is probably going back to RAW, whereas if The Fiend wins, Roman Reigns is probably returning soon. As regards to Strowman, I’m not sure, and I think that’s a bad sign.”
For what it’s worth, it’s safe to assume that Strowman’s title reign will definitely not make it past SummerSlam.
