Last night’s episode of NXT was quite an emotional one as Drake Maverick looked to win the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. The former manager of 205 Live was released from WWE back in April but has been allowed to continue working for the company as part of the tournament.
Maverick was well aware that a Championship win was the only way he could remain with the company, but came up short in the finals of the tournament last night with El Hijo Del Fantasma becoming the new Champion.
Maverick thanked the crowd and tearfully headed up the ramp before he was greeted by Triple H, who offered him a new contract which he quickly signed.
The former 24/7 Champion played the role to perfection since Fightful reports that he was well aware of the angle before NXT was recorded.
“Drake Maverick knew about the renewed WWE contract ahead of time — it wasn’t a surprise. It was unclear to those we’ve heard from when WWE decided to go this route with the story.”
WWE has offered a number of released stars a new contract but with a substantial pay drop, so it will be interesting to see how many stars make their return to the company in the coming weeks.
