Interesting Injury Update On Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio hasn’t been seen on WWE TV since he was forced to relinquish the United States Championship and was then locked in the Coquina Clutch by Samoa Joe. Mysterio was able to defeat Joe back at Money in the Bank but in the process, he injured his shoulder and was then forced to relinquish the Championship back to the Samoan Submission Machine merely weeks later.

WWE hoped that Mysterio wouldn’t need surgery and would be able to recover to continue storylines as Champion on Monday Night Raw, but this wasn’t the case so Joe was given the title back. Joe has since lost the United States Championship to Ricochet who was able to defeat the former NXT Champion last night at Stomping Grounds.

While it’s unknown as to whether or not Mysterio still has a claim to the Championship now that it’s not around Samoa Joe’s waist, according to a report by PWInsider the talk backstage at Stomping Grounds last night was that Mysterio could be set to return to WWE in the coming weeks.

The former World Champion is reportedly targeting July 8th episode of Monday Night Raw live from Newark, New Jersey which will be the go-home episode of Raw ahead of Extreme Rules.

Mysterio won the United States Championship because of a referee error back at Money in the Bank, since Joe’s shoulders were still up at the time. It’s easy to believe that WWE was planning Rey Mysterio vs Ricochet for last night’s Stomping Grounds event, but were forced to put Joe into the match instead when Mysterio couldn’t be medically cleared.

Mysterio technically never lost the United States Championship but he definitely has unfinished business with Samoa Joe so it’ll be interesting to see how he slots back into the Raw roster.
