This week’s episode of Monday Night RAW featured a 6-Man Tag Team main event matchup between Rey Mysterio, Humberto Carrillo, Ricochet and The OC (AJ Styles, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson). The Phenomenal One hit the Styles Clash from the second rope onto Ricochet to score the pinfall for his team.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Vince McMahon had changed the matchup during the producer’s meeting just hours before the show on Monday.
“I believe the idea was Orton & Ricochet & Carrillo were to beat Styles & Gallows & Anderson.”
The Chairman Of Board didn’t want Orton to team up with the babyfaces which is why the decision was made to put Mysterio in the match. Mr. 619 would’ve helped his team emerge victorious by perhaps tackling Drew McIntyre.
However, a contradictory report from Loose Lips Backstage suggests that the 13-time World Champion wasn’t even slated to be a legal contestant in the match. In fact, he was planned for an interference angle which would have cost the heel trio the bout.
“There were NO plans for Orton to officially be a part of this match. Original script had same six men in match, just different finish. Original was Orton interfering during the match and giving Styles an RKO which led to Mysterio pinning Styles for the win. Then Orton would give RKOs to Anderson and Gallows.”
“Again, there were no plans to have Orton in the match.”
WWE is heavily pushing Orton at the moment and with heel Seth Rollins running the show, this would be the best opportunity for The Viper to turn babyface ahead of WrestleMania season.
Only time will reveal what lies in store for The Apex Predator down the line. The latest rumors suggest that Orton will collide with Styles at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs despite their feud lacking some steam.
