Brock Lesnar will face Kofi Kingston for the WWE Championship at the SmackDown premiere on FOX on October 4.
WWE has advertised Lesnar for more SmackDown events in the immediate future, but that doesn’t necessarily mean The Beast will be dethroning Kingston next Friday night.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that WWE is simply using Lesnar to boost ticket sales.
We were told this doesn’t necessarily mean Lesnar is going to SmackDown, and that it simply could have been booked because they are trying to sell more tickets for TV shoots with a lot of weak advances.
As previously reported, there’s a 50/50 chance for Lesnar to win the prestigious WWE gold on SmackDown next week. A big title change would get fans talking about the show and that’s exactly what FOX is looking for.
SmackDown is being heavily pushed as the “A show” and FOX won’t leave any stone unturned to ensure that the blue brand outperforms USA Network’s RAW. This also explains why FOX wants “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt on their network.
Further reports suggest that RAW Executive Director Paul Heyman is planning to hand Lesnar the same lucrative schedule that Hall Of Famer Goldberg currently enjoys.
Heyman wants Goldberg to appear sporadically to “destroy people, as an old legend.” for the next several years until Brock is able to step into his shoes. It’s quite similar to the role that Bruno Sammartino was used in against Bob Backlund.
Long-term the idea would be Goldberg in that role for several more years, and eventually that role would go to Lesnar.
At this point, there’s no word on whether Lesnar is a permanent member of the SmackDown roster. The record 3-time Universal Champion works a limited schedule in WWE while earning the biggest paycheck across all locker rooms.
Tune into FOX to see witness the Brock Lesnar vs Kofi Kingston title showdown next Friday night!
