Possible Reason Why The IIconics Retained Their Women’s Tag Team Championships This Week On SmackDown Live

Peyton Royce and Billie Kay stole the Women’s Tag Team Championships back at WrestleMania and have hardly defended the Championships since winning them. The IIconics were originally scheduled to step into a feud with The Bella Twins following their win, but Nikki Bella wasn’t cleared for competition and was then unable to return to WWE alongside her sister Brie.

In recent weeks, The Kabuki Warriors have had The IIconics’ number and were able to defeat them in Japan at the end of last month.

This week on SmackDown Live, Kay and Royce were forced to defend their Championships against Asuka and Kairi Sane but the two women decided that a count-out loss was much easier than having to fight their challengers because they would still retain their titles.

The IIconics were the only Champions who didn’t defend their Championships at Extreme Rules this past weekend since the match was bumped from the card at the last minute and now according to Brad Shepard, this match could take place at SummerSlam instead.

There are a number of women’s tag teams in the company right now who could challenge The Kabuki Warriors if they are successful at SummerSlam and it could put the titles back in the main picture.

This makes sense since Kay and Royce were happy to just retain their Championships despite the fact that they lost the match via countout. The loss also means that Asuka and Kairi Sane will get another rematch because they were able to pick up a victory.

The Women’s Tag Team Championships haven’t been taken seriously since WrestleMania, so hopefully, if Paige can lead her team to victory next month then Asuka and Kairi Sane will be able to represent the titles the way Sasha Banks and Bayley wanted when they first requested the titles become a reality.
