It was announced this week on Friday Night SmackDown that Daniel Bryan would take on The Fiend for the Universal Championship at Survivor Series next weekend. Even though Bryan and Bray Wyatt have a history, which has allowed WWE to build up an interesting match in such a short space of time, this wasn’t the original plan for Wyatt at Survivor Series.
According to The Wrestling Observer, The Miz was Wyatt’s original opponent for next Sunday’s show, which was why Wyatt was originally scheduled to appear on Miz TV the night after Crown Jewel.
The delay on the return flights from the Middle East meant that Miz TV didn’t go as expected and WWE seemingly changed their plans for Wyatt’s opponent. Daniel Bryan was also originally scheduled to face off in a triple threat match. That being said, new reports state that this wasn’t the only reason why Wyatt’s opponent was changed.
“Daniel Bryan, I believe was going to be in the match with Roderick Strong and AJ [Styles], which would have been an absolutely incredible three-way. I just know that Nakamura was losing the title to someone.”
The Miz was scheduled to face Wyatt at Starrcade instead after the Survivor Series match seemingly didn’t go to plan, but that match has now also been changed since The Fiend is taking on Braun Strowman for the first time in his career.
A report by Sportskeeda speculates that the reason for this is because WWE is looking to protect The Miz moving forward since he is in line for a major push and all of his momentum would be lost if he was to walk into a match with The Fiend and lose.
Someone like Daniel Bryan is a much better challenger for him at present and in a few months when The Miz has been built back up as a formidable challenger, he could be in line to challenge for the Universal Championship once again.
