Reason for Recent Name Changes in WWE

Many eagle-eyed fans have noticed that since the debut of RAW Underground, the star once known as Babatunde, is now going by the name Dabba-Keto.

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer noted that this change was because the company wanted to own his name, whereas the star himself would own his real name if he ever left since it’s Babatunde Aiyegbusi.

Many WWE stars past and present have been through the same process over the past few years and Meltzer also brought up the reasons for the name changes when stars are promoted from NXT.

Alexander Rusev who is now known as Miro in AEW, lost his first name because Vince McMahon believed that fans would start referring to him as “Alex” and McMahon didn’t see that as a strong enough name for a heel.

The situation surrounding Cesaro and the fact that he dropped Antonio from his name was reportedly because the WWE Chairman was afraid that he would become known as “Tony” which also isn’t a strong heel name.

It appears that many stars have lost their first or last names over the years because of this reason, while others have had a complete name change in order for the company to own the copyright.
