Charlotte Flair won the 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble match last month and guaranteed herself a match for the Women’s Championship at WrestleMania, but being the victor of the match, Flair was able to choose any Champion to challenge and interestingly The Queen herself was challenged by current NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley last week on RAW.
Flair is yet to respond to Rhea’s challenge but it appears that following this weekend’s Takeover: Portland event, the WWE Universe will have their answer since speculation now suggests that the match could be a triple threat and Bianca Belair could be added if she’s unable to dethrone The Nightmare on Sunday night.
It came as a surprise that WWE would allow the winner of the Women’s Royal Rumble match to challenge for the NXT Women’s Championship instead of a main roster title, but it appears that it was a decision that was motivated by WWE’s competition with AEW.
According to a report by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer, it seems that WWE is looking to boost NXT’s ratings in the current Wednesday Night Wars since All Elite Wrestling has been ahead of NXT for the majority of their time on live TV.
“The whole idea is to build up NXT’s ratings with Charlotte Flair. They didn’t feel like waiting, they got blindsided by the January ratings. They were not expecting that. They thought that the corner had been turned.”
WWE did manage to win the war on a number of occasions in the build-up to Survivor Series but AEW have been the ones in the driving seat ever since, which reportedly came as a shock to those backstage in WWE. The hope now is that Flair is enough of an attraction on NXT to help the brand to beat AEW in the ratings once again and set a new presence on Wednesday nights.
