Gran Metalik reached the finals of the inaugural Cruiserweight Classic in 2016, but his singles run didn’t materialize in the company. WWE put him in the Lucha House Party alongside fellow luchadors Kalisto and Lince Dorado, which ended his aspirations of a decent run in the singles division.
However, WWE shockingly gave Metalik a championship opportunity against Intercontinental Champion AJ Styles last week, which ended up being a fantastic showcase of Metalik’s skills. Styles reigned supreme, but it certainly helped to improve Metalik’s stock in the business.
According to Ringside News, Bruce Pritchard put Metalik in the IC title match, in an attempt to please the ‘dirt-sheets’.
Apparently, Dave Meltzer’s comments on Metalik, in which he referred to him as the best luchador in WWE, found their way to Pritchard, who used this information to appease Meltzer.
Pritchard was recently appointed as head of creative for RAW and SmackDown, and this could be a move to make himself look good in front of Meltzer, who has a great influence on wrestling enthusiasts.
The match also helped establish Metalik and Dorado as potential tag-title contenders, considering they are the only active babyface team on the blue brand.
It was recently reported that Daniel Bryan has pushed for utilization of several mid-card and lower-card talents, which could be seen with the screen-time for the likes of Drew Gulak, and Shorty G.
