At Payback, Roman Reigns pinned Braun Strowman to win the WWE Universal Championship. The grand victory came just a couple of days after The Big Dog’s alliance with Paul Heyman was revealed on Friday Night SmackDown.
Heyman’s return to WWE television garnered a ton of attention. In June, WWE axed Heyman from the role of Executive Director of Monday Night RAW, and to see the legendary Advocate aligning himself with Reigns ahead of Payback was a shocker for the WWE Universe.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported the possible reason why Heyman is back on WWE television.
The 54-year-old icon receives a lavish paycheck from WWE and to let him sit idle is a loss for the billion-dollar promotion. Hence, the decision was made to use Heyman as the manager of Reigns for the foreseeable future.
“His performer’s contract, he wasn’t doing anything at all ever since Lesnar left and that’s been months now and he’s making a lot of money so I think that you want to justify that by having him work and being with Reigns, he’s being paid like a top guy so he should be in a top program and it’s not gonna get any bigger than Reigns. Reigns is going to be the biggest heel in the promotion.”
Heyman didn’t appear on television ever since Brock Lesnar lost the WWE Title to Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 36. Now that The Beast is on a hiatus, it’s time for Heyman to get back to work, and what better way to do that than to manage Reigns who is now slated to be the biggest heel in WWE!
Heyman isn’t back in the creative side of things, rather he is only going to work on Roman’s storylines, much like how he used to function for Brock.
