Sami Zayn was scheduled to be part of the last few episodes of Friday Night SmackDown but reports suggested that The Liberator had made the choice to remain home during the current COVID-19 pandemic since WWE had given many of their stars the option to continue to appear on WWE TV.
Roman Reigns is another star that reportedly made the decision to remain at home over the past few months, which is understandable given his situation with his health and the fact that his wife is pregnant.
Zayn is the current Intercontinental Champion which causes the company a number of issues and according to a report from Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer, the company is now prepared to strip Zayn of the only main roster Championship he has ever won if he doesn’t return to WWE this week.
Meltzer stated that “the basic gist is that he either comes to TV or he gets stripped of the title” which could mean that Zayn’s reign will be about to come to an end. Over the past few weeks, Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro have joined forces with King Corbin while Zayn has been absent, but King Corbin will be facing off against Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship this coming week on Raw, which means that Zayn needs to be back to lead his stable.
While it’s understandable that Zayn doesn’t want to put himself in danger, WWE needs to ensure that their Championship is still given the air time that it deserves and is defended every 30 days, if Zayn isn’t willing to return and follow these rules then the company is well within their rights to take back the title.
As noted, Zayn could make his return this week and prevent the company from taking the title, so there is an option for the former NXT Champion.
