WWE held the Money in the Bank PPV last week, which featured one of the most unique matchups in the company’s history. The match ended with Asuka winning the Women’s briefcase while Otis grabbed on to the Men’s briefcase.
Becky Lynch made a major announcement the very next night on RAW, in which she revealed the briefcase to actually contain the RAW Women’s Championship. Lynch relinquished the title after announcing her pregnancy and handed the title to Asuka.
Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that Asuka wasn’t the original choice to win the briefcase at the PPV. Asuka has received rave reviews over the past few months for her performance during the empty arena shows, and WWE has turned her face once again. However, Shayna Baszler was the original choice for the win.
Baszler debuted earlier this year and had a great start on the roster, but she was eventually pushed back due to the crowd response. WWE officials were willing to give her one more chance, but those plans were dashed when Lynch’s pregnancy led to a shift in the booking.
Becky Lynch didn’t compete in the ring for quite some time but was fixed in to face Nia Jax at the PPV. Nia Jax returned from injury after WrestleMania and has looked dominant on RAW. Jax instead competed in the MITB ladder match in a losing effort.
It was believed that Baszler winning will be a way to get her back in the main-event picture, and keep her alongside Becky Lynch for the time being. It was also rumored that Asuka’s win was a way to get the title off of Lynch, without giving her a clear loss and protecting her.
It remains to be seen where Asuka goes with the title, and will Nia Jax get her title match against the Empress of Tomorrow.
