The Fiend Was Reportedly Given a Short Title Reign to Put Heat on Roman Reigns

The Fiend won back the Universal Championship at SummerSlam when he collided with Braun Strowman in a Falls Count Anywhere match just two weeks ago, but this then led to the return of Roman Reigns.

Reigns’ assault on Strowman and The Fiend following their match led to a triple threat match at Payback this past Sunday night where Roman Reigns pinned The Monster Among Men to become the new Champion.

This means that The Fiend had a week-long title reign and wasn’t even pinned to lose his title. Many fans were upset at the way The Fiend has been treated in this storyline, but Tom Colohue explained on the most recent episode of Dropkick DiSKussions that this was done in order to put heat on Roman Reigns.

“As for why they gave The Fiend the title – they wanted the face to lose. You’re supposed to hate Roman Reigns.”

“They’re genuinely worried now that they’ve made him a bada*s, everyone is going to cheer him. That’s why in the ThunderDome, people were specifically instructed to boo Roman Reigns.”

It’s likely that The Fiend will be given his rematch at Clash of Champions since the former Champion wasn’t included in the title change last weekend.
