The IIconics’ Title Run, Why WWE Held Women’s Tag Team Championship Match On RAW

The tag team title reign could lead to a fallout between Bliss and Cross

Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross were crowned the new Women’s Tag Team Champions in a Tag Team Title Fatal 4-Way Elimination match against The IIconics, Kabuki Warriors and Fire & Desire last night on Monday Night RAW.

The IIconics’ title run can be simply described as worst at best. Billie Kay and Peyton Royce turned out to be the lamest tag team champions and their boring, unchallenged reign was heavily criticized by the WWE Universe.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that the possible reason why WWE even decided to give The IIconics the tag team gold in the first place was to cement Bayley as a singles Superstar once again.

“So now that it’s over we can say that this Billie Kay and Peyton Royce title reign was the dirt worst. Now it’s over and it’s the dirt worst. Now that it’s over, I mean what a mistake. Although I guess the idea was that they wanted to give Bayley a singles push.”

The Fatal 4-Way Women’s Tag Team Title Match was to reportedly take place at SummerSlam but WWE changed plans at the very last minute.

Instead of packing the already lengthy SummerSlam card with another title match, WWE decided to accommodate the championship bout 5 days before on RAW.

“For whatever reason I guess they decided to move it off the pay-per-view, I guess to give it more time and put it on TV. So I don’t know if we’re done to thirteen matches on the pay-per-view, but it’s probably a good thing to take one match off the pay-per-view anyway.”

It’s yet to be seen whether WWE books Bliss and Cross in a title defense this Sunday in Canada. It won’t hurt if the duo sits out this one but SummerSlam is a Big 4 event and WWE shouldn’t miss the opportunity of planting the seeds for a future Survivor Series/ WrestleMania feud.
