This week on RAW, Randy Orton turned on Ric Flair in the closing moments of the show. The Legend Killer picked up a victory over Kevin Owens in the main event following which he delivered a low blow and a brutal punt kick to the Nature Boy. WWE Champion Drew McIntyre and other officials rushed to Flair’s aid as Orton fled to the back.
On Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez reported that WWE changed plans for the segment multiple times. Vince McMahon originally intended to air the betrayal segment last week but due to the cluster going into the tapings, he decided to put those plans on hold.
“This angle by the way, that you saw with Ric Flair, that angle was supposed to be the week prior. There was that weekend where Vince like threw out the RAW script 8 times and by the time it was time to do the show they have 2 segments — one of them was Randy Orton beats up Ric Flair. By the time the show ended they’d done one of the segments and they ended up doing this segment the week after.”
Flair still praised Orton following the brutal attack on RAW. Much like always, the 16-time world champion drew comparisons between his daughter Charlotte and Orton.
The WWE Universe is no stranger to Vince McMahon’s swerves, and the betrayal segment brought back glimpses of Universal Champion Brock Lesnar turning on Paul Heyman a couple of years ago.
Orton is scheduled to face McIntyre for the WWE Championship in two weeks at SummerSlam. Rumors suggest that The Legend Killer could indeed leave the show as the new champion.
Given the long history between the decorated Evolution stablemates, it remains to be seen whether Flair shows up to help Orton clinch his fourteenth world title victory at The Biggest Party Of Summer.
