Randy Orton seemed as though he was ready to retire from the ring on Monday Night when he made his way out on crutches and showed off the knee injury that he had sustained the day before at a live event in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
News leaked to dirt sheets on Monday and many believed that the injury was legitimate and wondered what it could mean for Orton heading into Royal Rumble before Dave Meltzer then leaked that it was a work and all part of a storyline manufactured by WWE.
Of course, a few hours later, Orton himself revealed that he wasn’t actually injured as part of Monday Night RAW when he RKO’d AJ Styles out of his shoes and the two men seemingly hinted that they would be facing off at WrestleMania.
According to a report by Tom Colohue of Sportskeeda, WWE management is furious that the ending to the storyline was leaked since it was obviously a well put together angle and the RKO was only going to work based on shock factor.
WWE has had a lot of pressure on their creative team over the past few months since All Elite Wrestling has been pushing not only for ex-WWE talent but also because they are now a televised promotion as well. The creative team definitely have it so much harder in this era because of social media and it’s easy to see why they would be annoyed with the leak and the fact that Dave Meltzer decided to share his findings online because the storyline was essentially ruined when the WWE Universe found out the ending.
The segment still got the desired reaction from the WWE Universe in attendance on Monday night, but it would have been much more shocking if Meltzer hadn’t revealed that the injury was a work a few hours earlier.
