WWE Intercontinental Champion Staying Away From SmackDown Due To COVID-19 Concerns

WWE hasn’t put a break to their regular programming despite the COVID-19 concerns, and with USA being the worst-hit nation in the entire world, there have been several questions asked as to why the company is continuing with their programming.

However, WWE issued a notice that superstars who wish to stay away from the tapings due to the concerns will be free to do so, and nothing will be held against them for exercising their right to stay at home.

Roman Reigns and Kyle O’Reilly are two major names who have stayed away due to their health concerns, and it seems like Sami Zayn is part of the group staying at home to prevent the spread of the virus.

Sami Zayn has been away from WWE programming ever since he won his Intercontinental Championship match against Daniel Bryan at Night One of WrestleMania. He underwent a dental surgery a few weeks ago and cited it as the reason for his absence from SmackDown.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that Zayn was originally scheduled to be a part of the SmackDown tapings last week, but he pulled out and things were altered. Zayn’s buddies, Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro did show up to cost Drew Gulak his match against Baron Corbin.

Zayn made a last-minute decision to not to travel to Orlando for the tapings, which resulted in WWE shuffling things for the show. Zayn is still without a challenger for his IC title, and it’s been almost a month without a title defense.

Zayn’s dental procedure could be a factor affecting his schedule, as these procedures are often said to weaken the immunity system for a temporary amount of time.

It’s being reported that Reigns’ decision to skip the shows hasn’t gone down well with the WWE authorities and he has received heat for the same. Zayn could be on a similar trajectory if he doesn’t show up for the next set of tapings.
