Dolph Ziggler has had a strange few weeks since his return to WWE back in June after he was inserted into the WWE Championship picture ahead of Super ShowDown, it looked as though his fortunes were about to change.
Back to back losses to Kofi Kingston in Saudi Arabia and as part of Stomping Grounds inside a steel cage have left Ziggler at the back of the queue when it comes to the Championship picture now. It reached the point where Ziggler was even happy to team with Kevin Owens last week on SmackDown Live because a win would have led to a shot at the Tag Team Championships.
Of course, the two men were unable to co-exist as part of the main event against Heavy Machinery which led to Owens attacking Ziggler after the match and hitting him with a Stunner.
According to a report by Fightful Select, this wasn’t the original plan for Dolph Ziggler after he was taken out of the WWE Championship picture. Instead, the plan was for Ziggler to feud with Ali in the coming weeks heading into SummerSlam, but this feud has now been “tabled” in favor of the feud between Ziggler and Owens.
Ali has an interesting new gimmick that WWE has been pushing via vignettes over the past few weeks as part of the show, but if he isn’t going to be facing Ziggler upon his return to the ring, then it’s hard to imagine who will step up in The Showoff’s absence.
Ziggler’s feud with Owens could carry on until after SummerSlam, which means that Ali will be in need of a new opponent if the company wants him to make his re-debut with his new character before The Biggest Party of The Summer.
