Finn Balor was surprisingly missing from SmackDown Live last week as it appears that WWE has been working on a new opponent for the Intercontinental Champion in recent weeks following his win back at Super ShowDown at the beginning of the month.
Balor’s last feud saw him walk out victorious over Andrade in Saudi Arabia when his Championship was on the line, but the Irish star hasn’t had anyone to face in the weeks that have followed.
This week on SmackDown Live, Finn Balor was being interviewed about his next opponent backstage when he was interrupted by the returning Shinsuke Nakamura. The Artist hasn’t been seen on WWE TV for a number of months following a less than impressive run as United States Champion on SmackDown Live, but hopefully, this is the start of things to come for The Japanese star.
Nakamura made it clear that he was coming for the Intercontinental Championship as part of the backstage segment which led to speculation that Balor could be defending the title against Nakamura at Extreme Rules.
As of writing, there are just five matches officially announced for Extreme Rules which include Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch up against Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans in a “Winners Take All” match for the Raw Women’s and Universal Championship.
The Undertaker and Roman Reigns take on Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre while Bayley defends the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Alexa Bliss in a rematch from Stomping Grounds. Kofi Kingston puts his WWE Championship on the line against Samoa Joe, while Tony Nese challenges Drew Gulak for the Cruiserweight Championship.
Balor didn’t defend his Intercontinental Championship at Stomping Grounds last weekend, but it appears that he and Nakamura could steal the show on July 14th if their matches throughout their feud in NXT a few years ago are anything to go by.
