Seth Rollins successfully dethroned Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Universal Championship for the second time in his career this past Sunday at SummerSlam.
Throughout the title feud, Rollins was pushed as the undisputed underdog while Lesnar was portrayed as the unbeatable champion.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed WWE’s logic behind the Lesnar vs Rollins II storyline.
“The whole storyline for this win was, you know you can see how it played out, but their idea was ‘We want you to think he has no chance to win so when he wins it makes him a bigger babyface.’”
Till date, Lesnar has won the big red belt a record 3 times. With his recent title victory at SummerSlam, The Beastslayer is now one reign away from trying himself with The Beast.
“They’re just desperate to have Seth as the top babyface on this show.”
This week on Monday Night RAW, Rollins battled United States Champion AJ Styles in the main event of the show. The match ended in a disqualification as Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson interfered, laying waste to Seth.
Ricochet ran down to make the save but failed to even the odds. Finally, Braun Strowman showed up and decimated The O.C.
It’s doesn’t seem like WWE has been successful in establishing Rollins as a bigger babyface with the title victory in Toronto, Canada.
The Beastslayer did get a big pop last night on RAW, but it wasn’t close to what WWE had wanted to hear. Matter of fact, Strowman received a bigger pop, if not the biggest, on the same night and that too while sharing the ring with Rollins.
Only time will reveal whether WWE is able to cement Rollins as a top babyface whom fans will gravitate towards, and likewise, a major draw.
