John Cena may say that we can’t see him, but the 16-time World Champion’s records make it quite impossible to not see him in the list of legends of the pro wrestling industry. John Cena debuted on SmackDown in 2002, answering an open challenge to Kurt Angle, and has since then gone on to become the top superstar in the company.

John Cena joined the likes of Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock as the top guys of the company, before moving to a part-time role. His decade-long run in the main-event scene saw him win a record-equalling sixteen world championships. He also won the iconic Royal Rumble match twice, won the Money in the Bank briefcase, and several other championships in his career. He has also headlined WrestleMania five times in his illustrious career, which is second-most after The Immortal Hulk Hogan and Triple H.

John Cena has starred in several iconic rivalries against the likes of Edge, CM Punk, Randy Orton and AJ Styles. Cena was never the most talented worker in the ring but has delivered exceptional performances from time-to-time.

In 2015, Cena started focusing on his Hollywood career, which resulted in him staying away from WWE for long periods. He has made sporadic appearances since getting lucrative movie deals but has not officially left professional wrestling completely.

Personal Life

John Cena was born in West Newbury, Massachusetts on 23rd April 1977. He is the second oldest in a group of five brothers and has an Italian heritage in his family. Cena completed his schooling in Massachusetts and played football during his college days. After completing college with a degree in exercise psychology and body movement, Cena pursued a career in bodybuilding and worked as a limousine driver.

Cena is a big fan of anime, with Fist of the North Star being his favorite anime flick. He also learned Chinese to help WWE expand their reach in the Chinese market. He briefly moved to China in July 2018 during the shoot of a movie with Jackie Chan.

Early Days

Cena initially signed a developmental contract with WWE and was assigned to WWE’s developmental brand, Ohio Valley Wrestling. John Cena wrestled under the ring name of Prototype, which Cena described as 50% Human, 50% Machine. As the Prototype, Cena found success in OVW and was called up to the main-roster in 2002.

Ruthless Aggression

Cena made his debut on June 27, 2002 episode of SmackDown, answering an open challenge made by Kurt Angle. Cena went on to deliver a great performance albeit in a losing effort but received praise from the senior members of the roster. Cena’s debut is usually considered as the start of the Ruthless Aggression Era in WWE.

Cena stayed in the mid-card for the next few months and didn’t find himself in any significant rivalry. In October 2002, Cena teamed up with Billy Kidman to compete in a Tag-Team tournament. The duo lost and Cena turned on his tag-team partner, which is the only time Cena turned heel in his WWE career.

The Doctor of Thuganomics

As a heel, Cena debuted a new gimmick, a freestyle rapper. He declared himself as The Doctor of Thuagnomics and began wearing oversized t-shirts and chains.

Cena chased the WWE Championship in the early half of 2003, defeating the likes of Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, and The Undertaker. Cena won the right to face Brock Lesnar for the championship but eventually lost. He began a feud with The Undertaker, who defeated him at Vengence 2003. Cena eventually defeated Undertaker in a singles match on SmackDown with help from A-Train, and culminated the rivalry with a tag-team victory over Undertaker and Orlando Jordan, teaming up with A-Train.

In his pursuit for his first-ever title, Cena faced Eddie Guerrero for the United States Championship but was unsuccessful. Cena then turned babyface once again, when he joined Kurt Angle’s team at Survivor Series. Cena and Benoit were the sole survivors of the match, and won a 20-Man Battle Royal to decide the next contender for the WWE Championship. Benoit and Cena both were declared winners of the match, but Benoit defeated Cena the very next week to become the no.1 contender.

First Title in WWE

Cena was eliminated by Big Show in the Royal Rumble match in 2004. The two superstars along with Kurt Angle competed in a triple-threat to determine the opponent for Brock Lesnar’s WWE Championship at WrestleMania XX. Angle won the matchup, while Cena and Show began a rivalry for Show’s United States Championship. Cena eventually defeated Big Show at WrestleMania to win his first title in WWE and the first of his five United States Championships.

Cena defended the title against a variety of opponents for four months, before being stripped of the title for attacking an official.

Cena and Booker T competed in Best of Five series, and Cena regained the title once again. He lost it one week later to a debuting Carlito and took time away from WWE to shoot for the movie, The Marine.

After returning in November, Cena defeated Carlito to win the United States Championship for the third time.

WWE Championship Reigns and Rise To The Top

Cena participated in the Royal Rumble 2005 matchup which had a controversial finish after Batista and Cena were eliminated at the same time. The match was restarted and eventually won by Batista. Cena became the No.1 contender for JBL’s WWE Championship in the leadup to WrestleMania 21. Cena lost his United States Championship to JBL’s team-mate Orlando Jordan, but won his first-ever World Championship by defeating JBL at WrestleMania.

After his win, Cena introduced the infamous spinner belt, and moved over to RAW for the first time in his career. He had a tussle with the RAW GM Eric Bischoff, who forced Cena to defend his title against opponents of his choosing. Cena defended his belt against the likes of Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels, and Kurt Angle. It was during this time that the fans started to turn on Cena.

After defending his championship inside an Elimination Chamber, Cena lost his title to Edge, who cashed in his Money in the Bank contract. Cena won back the WWE Championship and went on to defend the title against Triple H at WrestleMania 22.

Cena faced Rob Van Dam at ECW’s One Night Stand pay-per-view in July, in which Cena was booed endlessly by a hostile ECW fanbase. Cena lost to RVD, after interference from Edge. Edge defeated RVD and Cena to win the WWE Championship and reignited his rivalry with Cena.

Edge was defeated by Cena in a TLC matchup, and Cena moved on to an inter-brand rivalry, involving the World Heavyweight champion Booker T and ECW Champion Big Show. Cena defended his title against the undefeated Umaga, and eventually won their feud and broke Umaga’s unbeaten streak.

Cena teamed up with Shawn Michaels to win the Tag-Team Championships the night after Royal Rumble and became a dual champion in WWE. Michaels eventually turned on Cena and the duo competed for Cena’s WWE title. Cena defended his title against Michaels, Edge and Randy Orton before The Great Khali announced his intentions for Cena’s title.

Cena and Khali battled for the title, and Cena broke Khali’s undefeated streak in WWE. Following this, the summer of 2007 saw the birth of a now-iconic Orton-Cena rivlary, where Cena retained his championship after two matchups at SummerSlam and Unforgiven 2007.

Cena was forced to relinquish the championship in October due to an injury, after holding it for more than a year.

Royal Rumble Success

Cena made a surprise return at Royal Rumble 2008, entering at Number 30, and won his first-ever Royal Rumble match. Cena, Orton and Triple H battled for Orton’s WWE title at WrestleMania 24, won by Orton. Cena failed to win the WWE Championship after multiple attempts and began a feud with JBL, in which the two superstars traded victories.

Cena became Tag-Team champion with Batista in August, and began a feud with the Animal. He lost to Batista at SummerSlam, and shortly after, got injured and was out for two months. Cena returned at Survivor Series and defeated Chris Jericho to win his first World Heavyweight Championship.

Cena defended against Jericho and JBL, before losing to Edge at No Way Out. Cena regained the title at WrestleMania 25, in a match also involving Big Show.

Cena lost the title to Edge due to interference from Big Show, resulting in a rivalry between Show and Cena. Cena defeated Show twice to end their feud, and moved on to the WWE Championship.

In a rematch from WrestleMania 24, Cena faced WWE Champion Randy Orton and Triple H. Orton won the match due to Legacy’s interference and began a long rivalry with John Cena.

Randy and Cena traded victories before Cena eventually ended their feud after a 60-Minute Iron Man match.

Cena lost the WWE title to new WWE superstars Sheamus in a Tables Match, and won the title back at Elimination Chamber in 2010. Cena was forced to defend his title against Batista minutes after winning the title, and ended up losing the WWE title. Cena and Batista then fought at WrestleMania 26, in which Cena regained the WWE title. Cena defeated Batista twice after WrestleMania and ended their rivalry.

Feud with Nexus

Following this, John Cena entered into a long feud with the Nexus, led by Wade Barett. Cena lost his WWE title and was forced to join the stable after a defeat against Barett.

Cena continued to feud with the stable for most of 2010, and finally finished the rivalry with the group at Royal Rumble 2011.

Cena entered into a rivalry with the WWE Champion The Miz, with the Rock making appearances due to his role as host of WrestleMania 27. Rock helped Miz retain his WWE title against Cena at WrestleMania.

Iconic Feud with CM Punk

Cena eventually defeated Miz to win the title and started an iconic rivalry with CM Punk. This is the time when Punk delivered the famous pipebomb promo. Cena was defeated by Punk at Money in the Bank 2011, and left the company with the title. Cena won the WWE Championship after defeating Rey Mysterio, and Punk returned to WWE with his own title.

Punk won the unification match at SummerSlam and was promptly defeated by Money in the Bank holder Alberto Del Rio. Cena and Del Rio traded the title before Cena lost it to Del Rio and moved on to a different feud. Cena teamed up with Rock to defeat Miz and R-Truth at SummerSlam.

Once In A Lifetime

After a rivalry with Kane, Rock and John Cena fought at WrestleMania 28, in a match billed as a ‘Once in a Lifetime’ battle. Rock won the match after a Rock Bottom. Following this, Cena feuded with a returning Brock Lesnar and defeated him at Extreme Rules. Cena won the MITB briefcase and tried to cash it on CM Punk, but failed due to interference from Big Show, becoming the first superstar to fail in his cash-in.

Cena tried to win the WWE Championship several times but failed, and moved on to a feud with Dolph Ziggler.

Second Royal Rumble Win and Twice In The Lifetime

After defeating Ziggler, Cena participated in the Royal Rumble match and won it for the second time. He went on to face WWE Champion The Rock at WrestleMania and took his revenge for the loss the previous year. He defeated the Great One to win the WWE Championship. Cena defended his title against Mark Henry and Ryback, before losing to Daniel Bryan at Summerslam 2013.

Title Unification and Feud with Wyatt Family

Cena returned from injury at Hell in a Cell 2013, and won his third World Heavyweight Championship after defeating Alberto Del Rio. WWE Champion Randy Orton and World Heavyweight Champion John Cena battled to unify both the belts at TLC 2013, which was won by Randy Orton.

Cena then began a rivalry with the Wyatt Family and faced Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania, where he won. Wyatt defeated Cena at Extreme Rules in a steel cage match, and the rivalry ended with Cena winning a Last Man Standing Match at Payback.

Feud with The Authority

Cena won his 15th Championship after winning a Ladder Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Cena was mercilessly decimated by Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam for the title. Later in 2015, Cena confronted the Authority led by Triple H, and a 5-on-5 traditional Survivor Series match took place between Team Cena and Team Authority. Cena’s team won the match after Sting helped Dolph Ziggler towards the end of the match.

United States Open Challenge

After failing to win the World title, Cena targeted the United States Championship and defeated Rusev at Wrestlemania 31. Cena went on to have a great run with the title, starting the famous US Championship Open Challenge.

Cena had a feud with the NXT Champion Kevin Owens, and ended the feud with a victory over Owens at Battleground. Cena faced WWE Champion Seth Rollins for a Winner Takes All Match at SummerSlam, which Cena lost. Cena eventually regained the title at Night of Champions, only to lose it to Alberto Del Rio at Hell in a Cell.

This was the final full-time run of Cena in WWE, and he was injured in January 2016. Cena returned to help The Rock at WrestleMania 32 and made a return to WWE programming in May, where he was confronted by AJ Styles.

AJ Styles and #BeatUpJohnCena

Styles and Cena had a lengthy feud, which finally ended with Cena winning the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble 2017. Cena lost the title to Bray Wyatt at Elimination Chamber, and moved on to the Miz . Cena and his girlfriend Nikki Bella faced Miz and Maryse at WrestleMania, which Cena-Bella won. Cena proposed to Bella after the matchup, and Cena left WWE for the next four months.

The Passing of the Torch

Cena returned in August to face Roman Reigns in a much-anticipated rivalry, which was won by Reigns. Cena returned during the road to WrestleMania and tried to win the Universal Championship and WWE Championship. He challenged the Undertaker for a match at WrestleMania, which was accepted by the Deadman at WrestleMania venue. Undertaker squashed Cena at Wrestlemania 34, and Cena has been making sporadic appearances in WWE ever since.

Cena appeared at WrestleMania 35 in his Doctor of Thuganomics persona and attacked Elias.

Outside of Wrestling

Cena has a great career in Hollywood, with movies like Bumblebee, Blockers and Daddy’s Home series. He replaced Dwayne Johnson in the Fast and the Furious series and is also in running to star in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie.

Cena has hosted several television shows, and is currently the host of “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader”. He also released a rap album during his run as the Doctor of Thuganomics.
